Does English have a role in our personality?

Hey! Ever wondered how you would see yourself as a third person? Imagine if every night you have the power to go back in time (for a day) and observe yourself for the whole day, your each action, your each conversation, each interaction, every little problem and the way you face them.
Won’t it be cool? It would then be easier to correct ourselves and be a better person everyday. *Well here’s a tip!* Do this every night before you sleep and just after closing your eyes and viola you will have a better way to monitor your personality .
That person you see right there is a peer reflection of your personality. Yes, I know everyone had lot of talks and discussion about personality development and stuff like that....believe me I am not sticking that kind of crap to your face.

Well, what I am interested in is what actually affects the personality development. Is English as a language necessary to build up a good personality? ...And stuff like that. It’s not been long that I overheard some people having this discussion which had a conclusive title “Why should I bother myself with English? I am awesome as it is!” And it got me thinking, are they right? Does English have something to do with our personality? So, here are my thoughts on this topic that I wanted to share. Please have a read and I do believe that every one has their own opinion so all the comments, opinions and arguments are welcome at the comment section. Hope you like it and here it goes....

We present ourselves by recreating our emotions and feelings expressed through a language. Personality can be seen through many perspectives. It can be physical appearance like height, weight, posture etc. or it may be the gesture, intellect, activeness and/or speech of a person. One is recognized as a social being in the terms of his personality. The society encircles and advocates the uniqueness of a person not based on name but based on qualities and personality. Personality is not always an intrinsic thing; it may have been, unconsciously, impression of other personalities (like of a favorite character in a movie). Psychologically speaking personality is the reflection of one’s inner qualities and his flexibility to adjust with the environment.

Now let us ask ourselves how do we acquire a personality? The answer to the question needs a quick flashback from our past. Does a 1 year old child have any sort of personality? No,right? Does a three year old have? Well quite not. But does a 10 year old have? Probably yes. So what really shapes the personality of people, according to me, is the language one speaks. The words from our mouth figure the speech. We are often supported by our body language while speaking. These words and movements combine to give us a personality. So can we now agree that it is the language which forms a base to our personality? Okay still having a frown ☺, let’s have a look ->

We often speak different languages but what we skip to notice is that we often change our personality whilst changing our language. What we speak is less of a concern than in which language are we speaking. Each language has its own charm and way of speaking. We intentionally or unintentionally change our body language, speech and tone in order to tune up with the language. Some languages are sweet other harsh, some are fancy other professional; some needs high tone while other seems to be singing. For example Brazilian is spoken like rhythm and when they speak English it’s almost as if they are singing! Think about it, we do change the lines while speaking in our mother tongue.
Talking about the languages, English is considered to be one of the official languages in the world. When we speak English we tend to be more formal than our usual self. Ever thought why it’s like? Let’s go to the history of English which is originated from England. Having a close observation in the ethics of people there, we can clearly deduce that the posture and way of speaking honored self in a proactive way. That’s what we have carried so far. English creates an open minded self and helps to procreate the professional self. It does profound our attitude and sets a limit to our character. Given the opportunity for this let us analyze how it shapes up our personality as we grow up, given that we learn English parallel to our own mother tongue. As a kid when we attempt to say a line we probably imagine how others would say it , obviously parents come in mind which then drags it to our mother language and from there we try to translate in English language . In this way we become too lenient to our language but still are cautious about the other. This constantly keeps us strict towards a language and hence we turn out to be two completely different persons in both the languages. There is one more interesting reason to observe this phenomenon. We are often not so much fluent in English (say) than in our mother tongue so we become selective while speaking, thus if a person is of talkative nature he may become serious in other languages (say English).
Now as we are clearer about the variation of personality with languages let’s see how English helps create a personality in us and more precisely what type of personality does it shapes in us.
English is a swift, strict and spontaneous language. This makes it global and official to use. While speaking in English people tend to have a straight posture and use small but swift body language to express it. This indistinctly creates a formal aperture to our attitude which symbolically enriches our professional skills. English is also a freeway spontaneous language, so being selective toward the simple words makes it souvenir to use. Compiling these all prospects of English we can conclude that it enriches the professional point in us. But how does it come into our system? Since childhood we are focused on writing letters, applications, and make formal announcements in English, while to communicate or rather fool around we use our mother tongue. This creates a partial impaired impression in our brain which provides a formal ground for the language English. We thus are more inclined to be serious or formal in English.
Now that’s something I have said to make a bunch of people offended and outrageous :) so let’s continue doing this with the following question:

What does English have over other languages?

English is the global language. It can be considered as the most widely spoken language. Business, work or academics English is the most common language and covers the widest perspective in all fields. Possession of a professional personality in English helps us to interact more effectively with people in same field of interest across the globe. Technology is the most vital component of our modernizing society. Access to latest technology helps to compete with the world, but as most of the upcoming technology uses English as their interface, knowledge of it becomes utmost priority.

Now I understand if you do not agree (or got bored and wanna quit!) but if you survived this..... Well let’s say that it’s good that I have brainstormed a little bit more over this, like this common question:
How should I develop an effective personality with English?
To create a strong personality in all areas one has to be a good speaker in English. But just speaking fluently will not be enough. To develop our language skills of English and the personality, we have to be at first confident of our context and also be a patient listener. One of the important factors is the body language. Speaking only with your words isn’t enough, we ought to coordinate our movements of eyes and hands with the words we speak to have an effective image of our visualizations of the speech.

How do we do so?

We have to be good in eye contact and in our body language, that is head tilting, the movement of our fingers and arms, shaking of our hands, also feet the chin scratching. When we are talking it has to be like a fluent interaction with others so we must think before we speak. We must always use simple words while talking as it creates an impression of effortless speech. We must chose polite and gentle words as it sprinkles the tinge of softness in our character. These characteristics will surely help to shape the personality but to hold it remains another vital component.....Confidence. Being positive makes us more confident. This will help us to give your best in in whatever we do. Being confident will make us to free ourselves more and will help us to stand in the crowd. Confidence is however a hard stroke to master without fluency in a language. When we are fluent enough and have our mind cleared about the contents of the speech we can be relaxed and will eventually feel confident. English will definitely give us a platform for formal conversation but these other qualities play on top of it to shape up a professional personality. People having good command over English can enhance their personality with great ease. The solo reason being that if they are fluent then they would definitely feel enough courage and confidence over interacting with groups and open minded sharing of thoughts. Once a person is confident about his English he would obviously learn new ways and adapt easily from his surroundings.

Is the contrary possible?

Now as we have discussed at length that English can definitely enhance the personality, let us try the converse of it. What will be the effect if we assume a person having a personality but not good English? For the sake of the proof let us assume a person who has got a good personality, has good knowledge and is intellectual enough to be outgoing and social. Nevertheless the unfamiliarity in English would restrict the person to interact fluently in social group. As he won’t be able to express his thoughts properly he would be treated as an insignificant member of the conversation. This would gradually make him an introvert. Consequently his friend circle collapses and his social status ceases. This damages his personality and hammers his self-confidence. He has no longer control over his personality and thus deteriorates it. This contradicts with our assumption that he has a good personality. Thus we may conclude proving that a good knowledge of English is essential for a good personality.
Agree?
Well....agreed or not, thanks for reading the article and please do leave a comment on your thoughts in this topic and keep following the blog as the next series of articles would be a tech-series in a field that is so very important and essential to many engineering projects but is overlooked as it’s one of the latest technology but is barely explained. That’s all I have to say for the suspense :)
See you next week!
